Lucidchart 4 Education

Guest writer Amanda Kaestner @lucidchart

Over the past few decades, the development and implementation of technology has accelerated at an incredible rate. Computers, automated systems, and mobile apps are now part of nearly every profession and industry in the developed world. It follows that for the rising generation to be successful in a technology-heavy work environment, they need to practice integrating tech applications into their everyday activities, starting in the classroom.

One tech application you might start seeing in schools that’s available to students and teachers for free is Lucidchart. An online diagramming software, Lucidchart can help students develop tech literacy in the classroom while giving them opportunities to think critically and collaborate with peers.

About Lucidchart

Using Lucidchart, students can create timelines, mind maps, floor plans, Venn diagrams, and flowcharts to analyze plotlines, outline and memorize a book using mind maps, find the greatest common factor, or visualize the rock cycle. Ways to use Lucidchart are only limited by the imagination, but to get your creative juices flowing, take a look at some example lesson plans for grades 4-12.

Because Lucidchart is web-based, it runs on any internet browser from any computer no matter the operating system. There is no required download meaning that students can start a project at school then go home and finish it from their personal computer.

It’s also incredibly easy for students and teachers to show off their work with presentation mode. They can display an entire diagram at once using the mouse to scroll through it dynamically, or divide a diagram into slides for a more focused presentation. They can even export their presentation to Google Slides and add additional context there. Lucidchart is innovating the way we can offer visual learning to the classroom.

Collaboration

In addition to working anywhere, Lucidchart makes it possible for students to work with anyone. Multiple students can edit a document in real time so that everyone can contribute as groups collaborate and teachers can pop in and monitor. Whether students are working next to each other in the classroom or from a distance in their own homes, everyone’s changes are visible as soon as they are made so nobody’s ideas get overwritten.

Commenting and chat features make it easy for students to talk about ideas and plans as they diagram together from a distance or at different times. With @mention notifications they can tag each other to ask specific questions or practice delegating by giving assignments.

G Suite integration

For classrooms using G Suite for Education, Lucidchart comes with an added bonus: a seamless integration with Google Drive. With a free EDU account, users can choose to automatically sync their diagrams directly to Google Drive where all of their other documents are stored. Free add-ons for Docs, Sheets, and Slides make it possible to quickly and easily add visuals to reports, data sheets, and presentations. Help students say hello to more visual thinking, writing, and presenting.

Perks for educators

All educators and students with an EDU email address are eligible for a free Lucidchart Pro account. This means unlimited documents and shapes, 1 GB of storage, free integrations with G Suite and Microsoft Office, presentation mode, and access to other advanced shapes and features. Schools that are interested in adopting Lucidchart across the board can implement advanced security and administrative controls with the purchase of an enterprise account.

To sign up for a free EDU account:

  1. Navigate to Lucidchart’s free EDU sign up page.
  2. Sign up for a standard free account using your educational email address.
  3. Click your name in the top right and navigate to “Account Settings.”
  4. Click “Get a Free Educational Upgrade” in the bottom left navigation.
  5. Receive your confirmation email, click the link, and you’re all set.

The way incoming generations are interacting in a classroom is changing rapidly and it’s imperative that we adapt and feed that desire to learn. If you’ve been looking for ways to change up the way you interact with your students to help them visualize lesson plans, then Lucidchart is a perfect place to start.

Tech Tools and Social Media for Parent Engagement

Empowering Parents Through Tech Tools and Social Media
by Clemencia Acevedo Image result for twitter

Teachers agree that parents are key to success in children's education. We know that their involvement in their child’s learning makes a huge positive difference. However, connecting with parents to inform them about their child’s learning needs and progress in class is a challenge because teachers don’t have enough time available in their daily schedule to make frequent phone calls, send text messages or write emails. But innovations in technology are gradually assisting teachers overcome this problem. Technology companies such as Remind, Apple, Facebook and Google  are partnering with public education departments to offer free and useful tech tools that teachers can use to engage students in learning and involve parents in the academic needs, progress and success of their children.

Parents want to be informed how their children are performing in class. They want want to know what they can do from their end to ensure that their children learn something to be able to do high school and college work in the future. At least, that’s the message I have received in my communication with my student’s parents. Even if parents work long hours and do hard work, they still care and are willing to schedule a best time to talk or reply to teacher’s messages because they want their children to succeed. Keeping in mind this belief, I have found different ways to communicate with parents fast and effective. I have followed and incorporated in my practice how teachers in the city and across the US have utilized tech tools and social media to communicate and collaborate with parents to guide young learners follow constructive behavior and help them finish important class assignments.

The use of technology and social media is gaining interest to support teaching and learning. This February, I presented Collaborating with Parents and Community Using Remind and & Social Media Tech Tools at Apple SoHo Store as part of Apple’s outreach to teachers. The focus was to share with other educators how I have been using tech tools and social media to assist parents play a more active role in their children’s education.

Using social media tools for education is a new phenomenon, many are hesitant to employ them in teaching. This is a short list of excellent online places teachers can ask questions.

EdTech, Education and Business

EdTech Meets Education and Business @ NY EdTech Week

On Tuesday, December 20, 2016, I had the opportunity to attend  NY EdTech Week. Thank you IZONE, Startedaccelerator and NY EdTech Week team for the ticket! Such a wonderful and encouraging day for educators, Ed tech creators and investors. The education and tech business community are building partnerships to improve teaching and impact student learning regardless of their social and economic background.

This collaborative initiative reminded me about the books I read for my history class at Hunter College on how innovative individuals, investors and government at the local and national level worked together in the first half of the 1800s in the United States and as a result led to a massive economic growth, boom in the Arts&Culture and improved the quality of life for some sectors of the American population. It also reminded me of that vibrant atmosphere full of thinking, knowledge and culture when I worked in the film industry and networked with film festival directors, filmmakers and producers in film festivals such as The World FF (CANADA) and Berlin FF (Germany).

NY EdTech Week featured speakers who are now making a difference in education driven by the belief that our students can succeed in school and acquire the knowledge and skills they now need to secure a decent life for themselves, their families and community at large.  It feels so good to know that such people exist and be inspired by their wisdom and actions.

Hear what educators, business men/women, reformers and artists had to say!
